Abstract

This article presents the memoirs of Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Petrovich Lisitsyn about the research voyage of the Vityaz in October–November 1949 to the Sea of Okhotsk and beyond. The results of this voyage were equally important for both the fisheries industry in the Far East and for science. The information obtained on the bottom topography of the Far Eastern seas and the composition of deep-sea sediments within the Kuril–Kamchatka Trench (Tuscarora Deep) formed the basis for modern understanding of the structure of the ocean floor.
