Abstract

As the result of ice observations carried out by the Soviet Antarctic Expeditions in 1956-1958, certain conclusions could be made about the distribution of ice, position of the edge of the sea ice and icebergs, and the thickness of coastal ice in summer. The intensity of the sea ice is rarely more than 6-7 units. Very close ice, 9-10 units, was observed only between icebergs crowded near islands of at the ice edge and open water. In the region of the South Sandwich Is. the iceberg closeness reached 8 units. In the direction from the Larsen Glacier to South Sandwich Is. - 6-8 units. The iceberg denseness of 10 units was observed in the coastal zone on 45°, 60°, 70°, 125°, 150° and 160° E. The paper shows the location of the ice edge and the distribution boundary of icebergs, presents the results of measurements of the thickness of the ice cover and the accumulation of snow and bare ice during 1957.
