On the bottom relief of the western region of the Pacific Ocean
Abstract
The expedition ship – R/V “Vityaz” of the Institute of Oceanology, USSR Academy of Sciences, conducted the study of the bottom relief in the Western Pacific according to the International Geophysical Year Programme. During the 25th (June–October 1957) and the 26th (November 1957–February 1958) cruises, the R/V “Vityaz” collected numerous materials about the bottom relief of this region of the ocean, which allowed to compare its different morphological sections. The system of the mountain ridges, island arcs and oceanic swells divides the bottom of the Western Pacific into a number of oceanic basins and basins of the marginal seas. Numerous trenches associate with the ridges of the island arcs. The maximum, depths of the trenches are corrected by the R/V “Vityaz”. Some unknown submarine mountains were discovered. The dimensions and forms of the important parts of the bottom relief of the Western Pacific were being detailed. The variations in the bottom relief types of the different basins are shown in connection with their position in general structure of the oceanic bed and in relation to the continents.
