Abstract

It is the 90-th birthday of Yury Ivanovich Sorokin - an outstanding marine microbiologist and ecologist. His research enriched Russian and world biological oceanography with ideas which in many respects defined its progress and today’s understanding of structural and functional organization of marine pelagic ecosystems, mechanisms of biological productivity and role of microplankton in transformation of organic matter.
