Education.
In 1989, he graduated from the Geological Department of Moscow state University, Department of Geochemistry, Chair of Petrography. He was enrolled in full-time Postgraduate Study with Professor A. A. Marakushev.
In 1995, he defended his PhD Thesis on "Pegmatites of the Khibiny massif and their relation to parent rocks".
In 2008, he defended his DSc Dissertation on "the Multiplicity of sources of island-arc magmas and the dynamics of their interaction", specialty-Petrology, Volcanology.
Science career:
In 1984-1993, at the same time, he taught at the Geological school at Lomonosov MSU, and was its Director (1989-1993).
Since 1992, he has been working at the Chair of Petrology of the Department of Geology of Lomonosov MSU. Since 2009, he has been a Professor.
Since 1998, he has participated in international research projects with Germany, France, England, the United States and Australia to study island arcs and active continental margins. He conducted field research on magmatism in the Kola Peninsula, Kamchatka, Alaska, Yakutia, the Krasnoyarsk territory, the Urals, the Crimea, Italy, and other volcanic areas. Participated in two international scientific flights (in 2006 and 2009) in the North Fijian basin.
In the mid-1990s and early 2000s, in parallel with his main activity, he worked at the Institution of Russian Academy of Sciences Dorodnicyn Computing Centre of RAS (CC RAS), at the Geophysical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (GC RAS), and for some time also at LLC «Rambler» and LLC «Stack Company».
In 2008, he defended his DSc Dissertation on "the Multiplicity of sources of island-arc magmas and the dynamics of their interaction", specialty-Petrology, Volcanology.
In 2016, he was selected by competition as the Director of the Fersman Mineralogical Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences. At the same time, working at Lomonosov MSU became a part-time job.
In 2018, he was awarded the honorary academic title of Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Scientific achievements
- For the First time showed the zoning of alkaline pegmatite fields relative to contacts with metamorphic rocks for the Khibiny alkaline massif. Developed a model for the formation of alkaline pegmatites, taking into account the migration of matter and changes in physical and chemical parameters in the contact zones.
- He developed methods for petrological modeling of water-containing magma crystallization as applied to the study of island-arc volcanism.
- Experimentally and theoretically studied the mechanisms of formation of molten inclusions in minerals in natural and synthetic systems.
- He proposed a model for the development of volcanism in island-arc systems from primitive to Mature stages with the sequential involvement of the forming island-arc crust in the magmogeneration region.
- He showed the possibility of using incomplete mineral reactions in magma to assess the conditions and time of their occurrence, as well as to determine the dynamics of magma foci of long-lived volcanoes.
- Created the information and educational system "All about Geology" on the Internet, which is the most popular Russian-language resource in This subject area. The scientific component of this project is the typification and organization of informal and partially formalized information flows. - For the first time, he obtained a complete petrological description of a number of modern and ancient magmatic systems in Kamchatka, Crimea, Japan, and Italy.
- Developed methods for quantitative determination of water in volcanic glasses by Raman spectroscopy.
- Identified and studied the composition of a number of rock-forming minerals (olivine, plagioclase, cristobalite), which are important as indicators of specific processes occurring during the formation of igneous rocks.
