In 1978 graduated as hydrobiologist from Biology Department of Moscow State University. In 1981, he graduated from the post-graduate course of Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences (IO RAS). In 1982 got Ph.D. thesis “Some regularities of feeding of different trophic groups of zooplankton”. From 1982 till present, he has been working at the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, RAS in Moscow. He participated in 15 complex oceanological expeditions to the Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic oceans and Antarctica as well as Black, Mediterranean and Bering seas. He published more than 90 scientific papers.
