Evgenii G. Mirlin

DSc on geological and mineralogical Sciences, Chief Researcher Vernadsky State geological Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Moscow.
ScopusID: 7006685566
AuthorID: 60946
SPIN: 8945-0830
Specialist in Geophysics, tectonics, geodynamics and minerals of the World ocean.
In 1962 he graduated from the Geophysical Faculty of the Sergo Ordzhonikidze Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute. He participated in many expeditions in the Black, Mediterranean, Caspian and Baltic Seas.
After graduation, he worked in the Department of Marine exploration of the all-Union Institute of geophysical methods of exploration (Gelendzhik) as a Senior Technician, Engineer, where he participated in the development of technical and methodological support for a new method of marine geophysical research – marine magnetometry. He participated in many expeditions in the Black, Mediterranean, Caspian and Baltic seas.
In 1966, he joined the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of Russian Academy of Sciences as a Senior Researcher and Head of the geomagnetic Research laboratory. He took part in many of the Institute's expeditions to various regions of the world ocean, including the 1st voyage of the R/V Akademik Kurchatov, the flagship of the Soviet research fleet. Based on the collected original material, in 1971 he defended his PhD Thesis "Magnetic inhomogeneity of the earth's crust and the structure of the spreading zones of the Atlantic and Indian oceans". He took part in the Icelandic expedition of the Academy of Sciences, where materials were collected on the structure of the mid-ocean ridges of the North Atlantic.
He took an active part in the use of new deep-sea technology in the study of the structure of the ocean floor. At the invitation of colleagues from the United States, who first used deep-sea towed complexes to study the tectonics of the ocean floor, he took part in an expedition on the ship "Knorr" in the North Atlantic, and then participated in the processing of the data obtained in the leading scientific centers of the United States: the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory, the Massachusetts Institute of technology, the University of California. The experience gained was used by him at home: he led the country's first Oceanological expedition to Lake Baikal, where the Paisis underwater manned vehicles were used for the first time. For his work on Lake Baikal, he was awarded the order of the red banner of Labor. The original material he collected formed the basis of his doctoral dissertation "Evolution of continental and oceanic rifting", defended in 1981. Based on his DSc Dissertation, in 1985 he published the monograph "Extension of lithospheric plates and rifting".
1985-1992 Head of the Department of Marine Geology and Mineral Resources of the World Ocean of the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Geology of Foreign Countries and the Central Scientific Research Geological Prospecting Institute of Non-ferrous and Precious Metals. His research interests focused on the issues of tectonic zoning of the World Ocean in order to assess its mineral resources, tectonic and magmatic segmentation of mid-ocean ridges, and intraplate deformations of the ocean lithosphere. Under his leadership, research on the comparative metallogeny of modern and ancient oceans was initiated, an all-Russian scientific conference on this issue was held, and a collection of articles "Metallogeny of modern and ancient oceans" (1992) was published under his editorship.
Since 1995, he has been working at the Vernadsky State geological Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences, holding the positions of Deputy Director for scientific and then for exhibition work, currently the Chief Scientific Officer of the Museum. During his work, under his leadership and with his direct participation, separate sections of the Museum's expositions were created, in particular, the installation of the Argus underwater manned vehicle in front of the Museum building, as an element of the future exhibition dedicated to the Geology of the World Ocean. He participated in the preparation and holding of all-Russian exhibitions at the Museum dedicated to the 275th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the 300th anniversary of the Mining and geological survey of Russia. Participated in the preparation and holding of the Days of Polish Science in the Russian Federation (2001) and the Days of Russian Science in Poland (2004). He combines museum and scientific activities, headed research on one of the projects under the program World Ocean.
He published about 200 scientific papers on the problems of Geophysics, tectonics, geodynamics, minerals of the world ocean, as well as the methodology of Museum activities.
