Education
In 1972, he graduated from the Plekhanov Leningrad Mining Institute (now State Saint Petersburg Mining University) majoring in mining engineer-geologist. In 1983, he defended PhD on the topic: "Genetic types and conditions of formation of late Quaternary marine sediments of the inner shelf of the Okhotsk sea" at the Leningrad Mining Institute majoring in "General and regional Geology". In 1999 he defended DSc thesis on the topic: "Geochemical zonality of modern sedimentation on the continental margin of East Asia" at the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of Russian Academy of Sciences, specialty - "Geology of oceans and seas".
Scientific career
Since 1975, he has been working at the Ilyichev Pacific Oceanological Institute Far Eastern Branch Russian Academy of Sciences, having worked his way up from Engineer to Head of the Laboratory and Deputy Director, scientific Director of a number of major Russian projects in the field of Oceanology and Marine Geology. He is a leading specialist in the Geochemistry of sedimentation in marginal seas. The results of his research have made a great contribution to the understanding of sedimentation processes, paleoceanology, sedimentary ore formation and geoecology of marginal seas in East Asia, unique in the size of terrigenous runoff, the variety of hydrodynamic processes and the activity of modern geological processes.
The main area of scientific activity is the experimental study of processes and Geochemistry of marine sedimentation in marginal seas, their cause-and-effect relationship with variations in solid runoff from coasts, water mass dynamics, sedimentary cover defluidization, and anthropogenic impact. The results of his research are published in leading Russian and highly rated foreign journals on Oceanology and marine Geology.
The main research methods were gross and fractional analysis of the chemical composition of sediments and their interpretation using multicomponent statistics to identify ways and means of supplying sedimentary material.
He is an author of more than 200 scientific papers, including 6 monographs, 3 atlases and numerous articles in national and international journals.
Major achievements
- the role of hydraulic differentiation of sedimentary matter on the formation of the chemical composition of marine sediments in various climatic zones of the marginal seas of East Asia and the Arctic is studied;
- a model of the sedimentation evolution of the earth's crust of the active continental margin due to the differentiation of terrigenous material by chemical composition during sedimentation has been created;
- conditions of accumulation and assimilation of heavy metals, mercury, and artificial radionuclides by bottom sediments are studied;
- methods of paleooceanological reconstructions based on the General or factional chemical composition of sediments are developed: climate zoning, paleotyphoons, Kuroshio water masses, shelf water masses of the East Arctic seas and their ice regime, redox conditions;
- models of formation of separate types of metal-bearing sediments were created;
- methods of mercury measurement in various components of marine ecosystems have been developed or improved.
