Scientific interest:
- Physical Oceanography of the North Pacific and the Far Eastern (Bering, Okhotsk, and Japanese) Seas;
- Chemical Oceanography;
- Biogeochemistry and carbon cycle in the North Pacific and far Eastern seas.
Important achievement:
- The presence of significant interannual variability of physical and chemical parameters of seawater in the Pacific subarctic and the sea of Okhotsk was shown for the First time. It is established that the main contribution to the interannual variations of seawater parameters is made by changes in water transport at the boundaries of large-scale cycles, determined by the wind stress vortex in winter, and 18-year cycles in tides. The tendency to increase the temperature and decrease the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the intermediate water layer is shown.
- He concepts of anthropogenic (or excessive) pH was introduced into the practice of Oceanographic research and a method for calculating it was proposed (Andreevetal., 2001). Quantitative characteristics of changes in carbonate parameters in the North Pacific Ocean caused by an increase in the content of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are obtained.
- The relationship between the interannual variability of physical and chemical parameters of seawater in the Sea of Japan and the transfer of water from the East China sea through the Korean Strait is Established. It is shown that an increase in anthropogenic pressure on the waters of the Yangtze river (East China sea) and an increase in water inflow from the East China sea lead to an increase in water temperature, a decrease in the concentration of dissolved oxygen and pH (acidification), and an enrichment of the waters of the sea of Japan with inorganic nitrogen in relation to inorganic phosphorus.
- Analysis of long-term satellite data allowed us to detail the scheme of surface currents in the Tatar Strait (Northern part of the Sea of Japan). It is shown that significant intra-and inter-annual variations in surface water circulation can be explained by sea level variability between the Korean Strait and the La Perouse and Sangar Straits. Anticyclonal / cyclonic water circulation in the southern part of the Tatar Strait is observed during periods of increasing / decreasing level differences and increasing / decreasing inflow of waters with elevated temperatures to the Sea of Japan. The mass appearance of fish and shellfish of subtropical origin in the Tatar Strait in the autumn of 2011-2015 is associated with an increase in the flow of subtropical waters to the Northern part of the Sea of Japan.
- Seasonal and interannual variability of water exchange between the Pacific Ocean and the Bering sea through the Kamchatka and middle Straits is Studied and the causes of this variability are established.
- The influence of the Alaskan jet stream on water exchange between the Pacific Ocean and the sea of Okhotsk through the Straits of the Kuril ridge Was studied. It was found that the strengthening of the Alaskan jet stream in the Pacific ocean increases the meridional water flows in the areas of the Kruse stern and Fourth Kuril Straits, which connect the sea of Okhotsk with the Pacific ocean, and is accompanied by an increase in temperature and a decrease in the Arctic of the sea of Okhotsk in the spring period, which affects the biomass of large phytoplankton and Pollock stocks.
- The investigated mesoscale water circulation in the area of the East Sakhalin current (Western part of the Okhotsk sea). It is established that the anticyclonal/cyclonic wind vortex over the sea of Okhotsk and, accordingly, the winds of the southern/Northern points in the Western part of the sea of Okhotsk lead to the formation of a mesoscale cyclonal/anticyclonal water circulation in July-August/October-December. It is shown that the origin of waters in mesoscale cyclones (with relatively high salinity and low temperature) is associated with coastal upwelling and tidal mixing. Waters in anticyclones (with relatively low salinity) are formed in the North-Western part of the sea of Okhotsk under the influence of the Amur river runoff. In October-December, under the influence of the winter monsoon, the inflow of waters with reduced salinity to the Eastern coast of Sakhalin island increases, which contributes to the formation of mesoscale anticyclones. It is shown that the high primary production and concentration of chlorophyll, as observed in summer in the area of the shelf and coastal slope of the North-Eastern part of Sakhalin, are confined to the centers of mesoscale cyclones.
- Water dynamics in the area of navarinsky canyon (Bering sea) for the period from 1993 to 2016 was Studied.
- It is Established that the intensity of anticyclonal eddies in the study area in spring and summer is determined by the wind regime in March-April. An increase in the southern and weakening of the Western wind friction stress in the Central part of the Bering sea leads to the entry of shelf waters with low temperature and low salinity into the deep sea and the formation of mesoscale anticyclonal vortices along the continental slope. The strengthening of the North-West flow of the Bering Sea slope current leads to an increase in temperature in the bottom layer of the outer shelf and a decrease in the Bering sea's ice cover. Stronger winds during spring and East compass points of North-West water transport outer shelf accompanied by an increase in catches/abundance of Pollock in the West Bering sea area in summer and early autumn.
