Educational Background
Bachelor of Arts (Botany) Washington University, St. Louis (1959) Master of Arts (Biological Education) Washington University (1961) Doctorate (Biology and Education) Washington University (1964)
Scientific activity
Since 1964, he has been working at Columbia University where he received the title of full professor. He combines teaching with research. Professor Anderson is a leading plankton specialist, including aspects that reflect the effects of changes in ocean temperature. He is also recognized, at present, as a leading teacher in the field of natural sciences, applying the theory of cognitive and neurobiological studies in the field of the study of thinking. He is a co-author of the development of an online scientific program designed to stimulate students to use real data, develops ways to improve the intellectual display of information among students.
Scholarly Interests
Neurocognitive theory applied to science learning. Electron microscopic and physiological ecological studies of eukaryotic microbiota.
Awards
In 1979, Prof. O.R. Anderson awarded the Bermuda Biological Station Marine Award (“Marine Biomineralizing Protist”) for research in the field of marine sciences, In honor of the research contribution of O.R. Anderson's protistology and symbiosis, called the species of diatoms: Cocconeis Andersonii (Reimer and Lee). In 1999, he awarded the Medal of the Paleontological Society of Japan, (Sendai, Japan).
