Education
In 1982, he graduated from the Biology Department of Lomonosov Moscow State University
In 1986, he defended his PhD Thesis on deep-sea holothurias.

Science career
Since 1987-Junior Researcher at the laboratory of bottom fauna of the ocean at the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
In the first years of his work, he participated in a series of expeditions to study shallow-water hydrotherms in Western Pacifica. In 1991, he made the first dive on the Mir GOA and since then regularly participated in research of the hydrothermal fauna of the Mid-Atlantic ridge using deep-sea habitable vehicles. In addition to the Mir GOA, he sank on the paisis and Alvin spacecraft.
In 1993-1995, he was a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation while working at the Institute of Hydrobiology and fish research at the University of Hamburg in the group of Prof. Hjalmar Thiel. Working on a Humboldt scholarship, he continued to study deep-sea side-footed holothurias, visited the most important Zoological museums and scientific centers of deep-sea research in Europe, including the Zoological Museum of the University of Copenhagen, the national Museum of natural history in London, the national Museum of natural history in Paris, IFREMER (Brest), the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (Wormley, Great Britain).
In 1995-1996-fellow of the Royal Society of London, worked at the Oceanographic center of Southampton (Great Britain) in the group of Prof. Paul Tyler.
In 1997-1999, he worked in the laboratory of the Marine biological Association in Plymouth (UK). Since 2002, he has been in Charge of the laboratory of ocean bottom fauna.
Since 2004, Head of the laboratory of ocean bottom fauna.
Research interests deep – water sea cucumbers and hydrothermal fauna.
Author of new species and genera of deep-sea holothurians bogonovich. Conducted a revision of the family elpidiidae and the family of floating holothurians pelagothuriidae. In 1990, based on the materials of his PhD Thesis, he published a monograph "Deep-Sea holothurias of the elpidiidae family".
The author of a series of works on nutrition hydrothermal shrimp, one of the developer’s ideas about Symbiotropin diet of shrimp and versatility trophic structure of hydrothermal communities. Under his leadership, the communities of the Logachev hydrothermal field (Mid–Atlantic ridge) and the Joakon Mosby mud volcano (Norwegian sea) were first described.
With his participation, information about the hydrothermal fauna of all known hydrothermal fields of the Atlantic Ocean was generalized and analyzed in a comparative aspect for the first time.
A great contribution was made to the study of the biogeography of hydrothermal communities and taxa and vertical zoning. It is shown that on a global scale, the distribution of hydrothermal fauna follows the same laws as the distribution of ordinary, "non-hydrothermal" fauna. Supports extensive international relations, is a member of the scientific committees of the following international projects: "Euro Census of Marine Life", ChEss (Viodeodgarh of Chemosynthetic Communities), Agsod (Arctic Ocean Diversity), MAR-ESO (Ratterns and processes of the ecosystems of the northern Mid-Atlantic). Also, part of the InterRidhe Biology Working Group.
Member of the Editorial Boards of the Journals “Magine Biology Research” and “Invertebrate Zoology”.
Author of about 100 publications, including 1 monograph. In 2 monographs he was an editor. Responsible editor and co-author of the collective monograph “Biology of hydrothermal systems” (2002).
