Born in 1946, graduated from high school in 1964 and entered the Faculty of Aerophysics and Space Research at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, from which he graduated in 1970.

Since 1970 he has been working at Shirshov Institute of Oceanology.

The main scientific direction of E.G. Morozov - study of internal waves and large-scale circulation of the ocean. He is engaged in experimental measurements, processing, analysis and interpretation of measurement data, numerical simulation.

The main scientific results of E.G. Morozov:

  • It was found that the main source of generation of internal tidal waves is the interaction of the barotropic tide with underwater ridges, in contrast to the previously existing opinion that the main generation occurs on the continental slopes;
  • For the first time, a map of the amplitudes of tidal internal waves of the World Ocean was built;
  • The barotropic tide energy balance is closed. It is shown that a barotropic tide loses about a quarter of its energy when generating tidal internal waves on submarine ridges. Areas of maximum energy loss by the tide on underwater ridges have been found. Previously, it was believed that the barotropic tide mainly dissipates in shallow water.
  • The most powerful near-bottom flows of Antarctic bottom water in underwater channels with velocities up to 60 cm/s and transport up to 4 Sverdrups, which provide the flow of Antarctic bottom water to the Northern Hemisphere, have been studied. In the last decade, he has led a program to study the flow of bottom water in the abyssal channels of the Atlantic (Vema Channel, Vima Fault, Romanche and Chain Faults, Kane Passage), which is an important part of the three-dimensional circulation of the ocean.

In 2010, he published a monograph in Springer, Abyssal Channels in the Atlantic Ocean, which summarizes research on flows in abyssal channels.

He participated in 47 ocean research expeditions on the ships of the Institute of Oceanology and was the head of the expedition in many of them.

E.G. Morozov is a member of the editorial boards of the journals Izvestiya RAN ser. Physics of the atmosphere and ocean (http://www.maik.ru/ru/journal/fizatm/), Fundamental and applied hydrophysics (http://hydrophysics.info/), Russian Journal of Earth Sciences (http://rjes.wdcb.ru/).

In 2011-2015 E.G. Morozov was President of the International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Ocean (IAPSO) (http://iapso.iugg.org/). He became the first Russian president of this association.

Published 218 scientific papers.
