Founded in 1959. Issued 4-6 times a year

The Journal of Oceanological Research has its history originated from the International Geophysical Year of 1957–1958 held on initiative of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics. During that time the National (then of Soviet Union) Geophysical Commission was formed resulting in creation of more than dozen specialized sections related to geophysical sciences: Geomagnetism, Earth gravity, ionosphere, meteorites, meteorology and atmospheric physics, oceanography, planetary geophysics, polar aurora, rocketry and satellites, seismology, solar activity and cosmic rays. Almost every section founded its own journal.

In 1959 section of oceanography published its journal – The Journal of Oceanological Research for the first time. Academician Yuriy Bulange became its first Editor in Chief, and the editorial board was headed by Boris Silkin.

The first issues of the journal were dedicated to publishing the results of International Geophysical Year.

Thereafter, since the beginning of 1970 ties the journal was publishing the results of measurements held under agenda of Polygon-70 program, and after which it was dedicated to the research of western boundary currents in Atlantic. Starting from the No. 30 in 1979, the journal published a series of publications related to the outcomes of the joint US–Soviet research program POLYMODE.

As the rule, most issues of the journal during that period were dedicated to major international research programs, and the journal was always associated with the names of notable scientists: N.N. Sysoev, I.M. Belousov, R.P. Bulatov, E.G. Morozov.

In 1993 the publication of the Journal of Oceanological Research had stopped after volume 44.

In 2017 P.P. Shirshov Institution of Oceanology decided to resume publishing Journal of Oceanological Research, starting with volume 45 in December 2017.

Now the journal publishes original scientific articles on topical issues of technology development for marine research, theoretical and experimental results in physical, chemical, geological oceanography, processes in atmosphere-ocean interaction, biological and marine ecosystem research.

In addition to the printed journal there is also online version starting with that year, and the work to create online library of past issues has begun as well.
