On the issue of the geographical distribution of deep-sea benthic fauna of the Antarctic
Abstract
The analysis of the geographic distribution of the bottom invertebrates inhabiting water depths below 2000 m to the South of 40° S allow to determine according to fauna an independent deep water Antarctic region. 72 % of the fauna of this region contains endemic species. The region covers the depths of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans to the South of 40° S; it could be divided into two sub-regions: Antarctic - Atlantic and Antarctic - Indian - Pacific, with two provinces: Indian and Pacific. The frontier between the sub-regions and the provinces runs along the South Atlantic ridge, the New Zealand sill, and from the Crozet Is to the Enderby Land in the Ob Plateau region.
