New information about the bottom relief of the Western Pacific ocean
Abstract
The paper deals with the new data collected by the «Vityaz» on the 27th cruise during the IGY about the bottom relief of the Western Pacific. In the area of the Marianas Is. and the Caroline Is. many unknown submarine mountains were discovered, one of which was named Miklukho-Maklay. The bottom relief of the Marianas trench was studied in detail in its deepest region. A bathymetric map is compiled. The maximum depth of the Yap trench is found to be 8,527 m. Along the southern slope of the Caroline swell runs the narrow Sorol-Yanthe trouggh. To the North of the Western Islands (Melanesia) a trench is discovered which was named the Western-Melanesian.The morphology of the bottom was studied in detail in the region of the south-eastern termination of New Guinea. The relief of some barrier reefsis also described.
